Sea Girt Inlet, which connected Wreck Pond to the ocean, needed to be marked because it was shallow and couldn’t offer large ships refuge from storms. The Sea Girt Lighthouse was first illuminated in 1896 at a time when lighthouses and lightships were under the control of a federal agency known as the Life Saving Service. At the time, their primary mission was to keep ships away from treacherous coasts.
Beautiful building rich in yesterday that you can walk up all the way to the top. If you love lighthouses...visit this one.
Great tours. I loved hearing all about the history. Would have given it 5 stars, but only being open once a week for two hours is a bit saddening.
